In November 2007, 15 students from Connecticut College went to Washington, D.C. to take part in Powershift ‘07, the first annual climate conference and rally for youth in the United States. Hosted by the Energy Action Coalition, an organization founded by Connecticut College alumna, Kassie Rohrbach, Powershift brought over 7,000 students and youth from around the country to Washington to hear from the current leaders of the environmental movement and to attend trainings in everything from campus organizing to running for office. Coming back from Powershift, these students were inspired and empowered to address environmental issues on and off campus at a whole new level.

This February, Powershift ‘09 is scheduled to be all that and more. Predicted at over 10,000 youth attending, it will be the largest conference the Washington D.C. Convention Center has ever hosted. Like in 2007, it will energize attendees through extensive, educational training sessions and speeches by environmental leaders like Green For All’s Van Jones, icons of the environmental movement like former Vice President Al Gore, and elected representatives like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

To encourage the participation of our fellow students, we are seeking funding for registration and transportation to the event for as many students as possible. We are also working to find free housing in the D.C. area through students who live in the area and contacts with local churches and community centers. President Hidgon and the Dean of the College Community have already committed a combined $1,500 to provide registration to over 40 students, and since then the Renewable Energy Club has registered over 60 students. There is incredible interest in this opportunity for students, and providing free registration and housing opens the experience to students of all financial backgrounds. With ample funding, we believe we could bring over 75 students from Connecticut College to Powershift. Our goal is to raise $6,000 by February 13th. Your support will get us there.
